How a small cooperative is bringing back a drought-tolerant landrace lost for two generations.
In the dry plains of Chamwino, a group of women farmers have rescued an indigenous sorghum variety that had nearly disappeared from local fields. Working with elders who remembered the seed from their youth, the cooperative multiplied a handful of grains into a community seed bank that now serves more than forty households. The landrace tolerates drought, matures early, and produces a flour prized for stiff porridge. Today the women run seed-exchange days every planting season and train neighbouring villages on selection and storage techniques rooted in traditional knowledge.
